The problem isn't so much the service, its that they have you locked in once you sign up because when you cancel the US Postal service will not let them refuse mail for 6 months meaning you can't do a change of address. This requires you to track down EVERY single person or company that you MIGHT want to get mail from. Sure blame the USPS but they also bury that fact in the fine print.

ECM also made a significant price increase and at the same time removed a notice that reminded you about the cost of each action (scan, shred, etc) saying users found it "annoying". That is either really bad timing or outright deceit. I tend to believe the latter.

Finally you get a PO Box # but also a ECM member ID. That make about a 20 digit string that you will need to remember. Believe me when I tell you that many online address forms do not properly process this address. It took 3 calls to get Chase Bank to believe that I actually had that address. Ugh.

A generally regrettable foray into what could have been a great service.

ECM has no profits after years of Ron flying first class to Europe to kite his business plan. They do not have a business with Swiss Post, Swiss Post simply offers it to SP customers (who have all rejected it.) Bottom line is: no IP (they use PEOPLE, people) and no business sense. Another Ron-a-thon designed to pay him a salary until the investors figure out he has been LYING about the business development efforts with large customers and when the few hundred retail customers leave, that's all she wrote.

I just created my first shipment under the new pricing. Now it is a complete RIPOFF. They are actually charging $.95 for each and every piece of mail that they stick into the Fedex envelop??

2nd day Fedex $9.00 Oregon to Bakersfield, CA
35 pieces of mail $.95/each = $33.25
Total cost under new pricing = $41.25

Check out paperlessmail.com They have been delivering postal mail online since 2001 and do it for less than earthclassmail. Their service is $9.95 per month. PaperlessMail is efficient because the entire mailpiece and contents are scanned and delivered as soon as it is received. When earthclassmail receives the mail they only scan the outside of the mailpiece and then delivery is delayed while you need to tell them what you want them to do with it.

I was one of the first to give supportive comments to this service back in December 2007 but with the price changes it will cost me about $750 per year for the service I now use costing about $216 per year! ($19.95 base + $4.95 shredding + 10 scans per month x $1.50 per scan + 30 letters sitting in storage for 3 months x $0.25 per letter per month). Being overseas and with their very high rates to send mail overseas, I only have the mail sent to me 2-3 times per year, hence the long archival times.

So, when my contract is up in December, Bye Bye. Happily I never stopped using my previous very low cost mail forwarding company when I signed up with ECM, but had all my mail still going to that forwarder, who then sent it on to ECM. This was because I was nervous about how long ECM (Remote Control Mail / Document Command back then) would stay in business. And, now, as far as I am concerned, they ARE out of (my) business, and so at least I don't have to change my addresses people send mail to - I have always used the old (inexpensive) mail forwarding company. But it would be nice to find a reasonably price "ECM" again.

Are you still using this service? What do you think of their increased pricing as of July 2009? I have happily used the service even with their few flaws over the past two years. Now I guess the costs of scanning mail was too much for them to continue. You mentioned 100 page scans per month for $22.95 when you wrote this review in March. The new plan for that same number of scans is now between $40-$60 per month. Their cost is now less to have mail forwarded which can be done by anyone of their competitors, so I do not see how they are special anymore.

Great concept for the long term traveler! I'm surprised someone hasn't thought of that before. I'd still be concerned about the copying and abuse of personal information though, even with the safeguards the company has.
